SING group invited to join the Editorial Board of Applied Soft Computing Journal

Our group leader, Florentino Fdez-Riverola has been recently invited by R. Roy (Editor-in-Chief) to join the Editorial Board of ASOC, the Official Journal of the World Federation on Soft Computing (WFSC).

Applied Soft Computing, published by Elsevier, is an international journal promoting an integrated view of soft computing to solve real life problems. Soft computing is a collection of methodologies, which aim to exploit tolerance for imprecision, uncertainty and partial truth to achieve tractability, robustness and low solution cost. The focus is to publish the highest quality research in application and convergence of the areas of Fuzzy Logic, Neural Networks, Evolutionary Computing, Rough Sets and other similar techniques to address real world complexities.

Ingeniería informática contra las infecciones hospitalarias

Un grupo investigador del Campus colabora con el CHUO y espera obtener resultados en 2013. El grupo de Sistemas Informáticos de Nueva Generación (Sing) de la Escuela Superior de Ingeniería Informática del Campus avanza en un proyecto de detección y clasificación automática de infecciones nosocomiales, que son aquéllas contraídas en ambientes hospitalarios pero no relacionadas con el motivo del ingreso. Para ello, el equipo liderado por Florentino Fernández Riverola desarrolla un sistema que permite clasificar los síntomas y agrupar los distintos subgrupos de infección. El trabajo, financiado por la Xunta, se lleva a cabo en colaboración con el Complexo Hospitalario de Ourense hasta el año 2013.

Jornada Investigación Biomédica

El objetivo de las Jornadas será dar a conocer la investigación biomédica realizada en la provincia de Ourense, con el propósito de estimular la colaboración entre investigadores del ámbito sanitario y universitario.

Contara con las ponencias del Dr. Ángel Carracedo Álvarez- Catedrático de Medicina Legal de la USC, Director del Instituto de Medicina Forense y de la Fundación Genómica de Galicia, y del Dr. Carlos Diéguez González – Catedrático de Fisiología de la USC. En el desarrollo de la Jornada, tres mesas redondas sobre resultados de investigación, recursos y proyectos, completarán el programa.

En el programa contiene las normas de envío para la presentación de comunicaciones oral o póster (1.resultados de investigación y 2.proyectos de investigación). Se aceptarán aquellos trabajos en los que al menos un investigador de Ourense, figure como autor.

6th International Conference on Practical Applications of Computational Biology & Bioinformatics (PACBB '2012)

1st Call for Papers

The success of Bioinformatics in recent years has been prompted by research in Molecular Biology and Molecular Medicine in several initiatives. These initiatives gave rise to an exponential increase in the volume and diversification of data, including nucleotide and protein sequences and annotations, high-throughput experimental data, biomedical literature, among many others.

Systems Biology is a related research area that has been replacing the reductionist view that dominated Biology research in the last decades, requiring the coordinated efforts of biological researchers with those related to data analysis, mathematical modeling, computer simulation and optimization.

The accumulation and exploitation of large-scale databases prompts for new computational technology and for research into these issues. In this context, many widely successful computational models and tools used by biologists in these initiatives, such as clustering and classification methods for gene expression data, are based on Computer Science/ Artificial Intelligence (CS/AI) techniques. In fact, these methods have been helping in tasks related to knowledge discovery, modeling and optimization tasks, aiming at the development of computational models so that the response of biological complex systems to any perturbation can be predicted.

The 6th International Conference on Practical Applications of Computational Biology & Bioinformatics (PACBB) aims to promote the interaction among the scientific community to discuss applications of CS/AI with an interdisciplinary character, exploring the interactions between sub-areas of CS/AI, Bioinformatics, Chemoinformatics and Systems Biology.

Brand new ideas in these fields are sought, as well as substantial and relevant revisions and actualizations of previously presented work, project summaries and PhD thesis presented or not.

Submission instructions


Everyone interested in participating and presenting his/her work in this workshop may do it by sending a contribution. The papers should be written in English, with a maximum length of 8 pages. They must consist of original, relevant and previously unpublished sound research results related to any of the topics of the conference.

Papers Format

All papers must be formatted according to the Advances in Intelligent and Soft Computing Series Springer template. The template can be downloaded Here. In order to submit a paper you must register as an author at PACBB 2012 conference management system. All papers for PACBB 2012 must be submitted in electronic form (PDF format).



Accepted papers will be included in the proceedings, published in the Advances in Intelligent and Soft-Computing series of Springer Verlag. At least one of the authors will be required to register and attend the symposium to present the paper in order to include the paper in the conference proceedings.

  • Papers (oral or poster) should not exceed one page and can be written in Galician, Spanish or English Language.
  • Papers must include an abstract of 2-4 lines.
  • Style format: Times New Roman 12 pt., margins = 2 cm.
  • Presenting author should be highlighted with an asterisk.
  • If the contribution is presented to the Best student paper award, the student must be the first author (in case of an oral contribution, the student will present the work).
