Bioinformatics software repositories: OMICtools & MyBioSoftware

Nowadays, there is a vast amount of researchers and developers creating bioinformatics software, tools and libraries. Although web search engines are important resources when looking for existing bioinformatics software, dedicated sites are also welcome. In this scenario, OMICtools and MyBioSoftware are two valuable resources, since they provide high quality, curated lists and reviews of existing bioinformatics software.

OMICtools is a manually curated metadatabase that provides an overview of more than 4400 web-accessible tools related to genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics. All tools have been classified by omic technologies (next-generation sequencing, microarray, mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance) associated with published evaluations of tool performance.

Similarly, MyBioSoftware is a blog-like web page that offers a complete, up-to-date list of bioinformatics software, classified in different categories such as assembly tools, proteomics or RNA analysis, among others.

Launching of the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI)

Thomson Reuters recently launched the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI), which extends the universe of publications in Web of Science in order to include high-quality, peer-reviewed publications of regional importance and in emerging scientific fields. ESCI makes content visible in Web of Science Core Collection to key opinion leaders, evaluators and funders, even if it has not yet reached a notorious citation impact on an international audience.

Journals included in ESCI have passed a first editorial evaluation and can continue to be considered for inclusion in SCIE, SSCI, or AHCI, which have rigorous selection criteria and evaluation processes. All ESCI journals will be indexed according to the same standards, including cover-to-cover indexing, cited reference indexing, subject category assignment, and indexing all authors and addresses.
